The RSPCA is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, so we were aiming to sign up runners in this year’s Run Leicester event.
50 running have signed up to either the 10k or ½ marathon and help us to support animals in need.

Running for animals in need
Imagine the conditions in a puppy farm or illegal breeder where animals barely have the room to turn around let alone walk or run. At the RSPCA Woodside we support the work that RSPCA Inspectors face daily to liberate animals imprisoned in these dreadful conditions, to free animals from abuse, neglect or greed breeding.
YOU can help by running for them.
By signing up to our RUN Leicester event it helps to raise the much needed funds that we need every week to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome hundreds of animals in need
On Sunday 13th October 2024, for those that are running don’t forget your trainers and join RSPCA Woodside and thousands of runners from around Leicestershire and beyond for the Run Leicester Half Marathon and 10K.
Beginning in Leicester’s Victoria Park at 09:15 you will be taken on a tour of Leicester’s city centre streets and beautiful parks on the popular half marathon route.
Whether you’re running, walking, cheering and supporting, or volunteering we hope that you will join us to help raise thousands of pounds to help animals in need and help make 2024’s Run Leicester Half Marathon and 10K a massive success.
There are two routes, the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) or the 10k route. Both routes will begin at Victoria Park and take you on a tour of Leicester’s city centre streets and beautiful open parks. With plenty of entertainment along the way, you will be motivated all the way round with cheers, chants and celebrations and look out for the Woodside Cheer Squad on your way round. We would only ask – Don’t take the dog with you………..
Alternatively, fancy taking part without having to run anywhere? You can help support our runners by donating a few pounds on our JustGiving page. Click here.
By running it will be helping animals in need animals like BELLA the German Shepherd or SIMON the cat.
Case Study
Bella the German Shephard
4-yr-old Bella the German Shepherd was brought into RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre as a cruelty case animal at the end of January 2023. Bella was underweight, weighing in at 23kg when she was found, whereas a healthy female German Shepherd is normally about 30kg. She also was anaemic, had open untreated wounds all over her body including infected wounds on her legs, overgrown toenails and sore swollen bleeding paws when she was rescued.
Bella was placed on an appropriate diet and fed little and often at Woodside Animal Centre to ensure she gained weight gradually. She also received anti-inflammatory medication and anti-biotics to treat her open wounds. She fully recovered from her injuries and was adopted in November 2023, weighing a healthy 33kg. She now goes on regular caravan holidays and is thoroughly enjoying exploring Great Britain with her family.
Case Study
Simon the Cat
Simon the cat was rescued in June 2023 after being attacked by a dog and then falling into a paddling pool in a desperate attempt to get away from the dog. He was brought into RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre in critical condition and it was touch-and-go whether he would survive. When the vets examined him, it was discovered that he was very thin and severely anaemic. The vets treated him with antibiotics and steroids. He certainly used up one of his nine lives as he needed a total of 14 weeks of nursing and veterinary care but thankfully, he pulled through, and his mum adopted him in October 2023.
9-yr-old Simon now spends his nights sleeping on the big bed, and his days sitting in his own spot on the sofa, people-watching out the window, and watching his favourite TV programmes- sports and nature documentaries. He gives his mum lots of cuddles to distract her from regularly scratching her carpets.
